Comprehensive Policy Statement: Ethics in Research Writing, Publication, and Peer Review

This detailed policy outlines the rigorous ethical standards upheld by the Mariammal Educational Trust aided Tamilmanam Publishers (The Trust and Publisher) for all submitted and published scholarly works, including articles, books, monographs, and conference proceedings. Our commitment is to maintain the highest levels of integrity, transparency, and accountability across the entire publishing lifecycle.

1. Foundation of Ethical Practice and COPE Adherence

All participants in the publishing process—including Authors, Editors/Guest Editors, Reviewers, and Peer Review bodies—are expected to adhere to the best ethical practices in research writing and publication.

The Trust and Publisher ground their ethical policy in strict observance of the international standards and Core Practices established by COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics). These standards address major ethical concerns and provide procedures for handling complex issues such as data fabrication, misappropriation of intellectual work, conflicts of interest, and managing post-publication corrections or retractions.

Key Areas of Ethical Concern:

  • Authorship and Contributorship: Ensuring that all listed authors have made significant intellectual contributions and that non-author contributors are appropriately acknowledged.
  • Originality and Plagiarism: Strict prohibition of plagiarism, data fabrication, and redundant publication (self-plagiarism).
  • Data Integrity and Sharing: Expectation that underlying data is maintained and, where appropriate, made available for verification by others.
  • Conflicts of Interest (CoIs): Mandatory disclosure of any financial, personal, or professional relationships that might influence the manuscript’s findings or the editorial decision-making process.

2. Ethical Responsibilities of Stakeholders

A. Authors’ Responsibilities

Authors are required to submit only original work that has not been simultaneously submitted elsewhere. Specifically, authors must:

  1. Maintain Accuracy: Present an accurate account of the research performed and an objective discussion of its significance.
  2. Acknowledge Sources: Properly cite and acknowledge all sources of information and ensure detailed permission has been obtained for the reproduction of any copyrighted material (text, figures, tables).
  3. Disclose CoIs: Clearly state any potential financial or other substantive conflicts of interest that could be construed to influence the results or interpretation of the work.
  4. Cooperate in Post-Publication Review: Promptly notify the Editor if they discover a significant error or inaccuracy in their published work and cooperate with the Editor to retract or correct the paper.

B. Editors’ and Guest Editors’ Responsibilities

Editors and Guest Editors are the primary guardians of the journal/book series’s integrity and must act with objectivity, fairness, and independence from commercial concerns. They must:

  1. Ensure Fair Play and Impartiality: Evaluate manuscripts solely on their intellectual merit regardless of the authors’ race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy.
  2. Manage Confidentiality: Ensure that submitted manuscripts are treated as confidential documents until publication.
  3. Manage the Peer Review Process: Be responsible for ensuring the quality and integrity of the review process, selecting appropriate reviewers, and ensuring timely evaluation.
  4. Investigate Misconduct: Take reasonable steps to pursue suspected misconduct (plagiarism, fabrication, etc.) and follow COPE guidelines when dealing with allegations or appeals.

C. Reviewers’ and Peer Reviewers’ Responsibilities

Reviewers are critical to maintaining scholarly quality and providing unbiased evaluation. They must:

  1. Maintain Confidentiality: Treat the manuscript as a privileged document, refraining from discussing it with unauthorized individuals or using the information contained within for personal advantage.
  2. Act Promptly and Objectively: Submit reviews within the requested timeframe and formulate their observations clearly and objectively, providing constructive criticism without personal commentary.
  3. Declare Conflicts: Alert the Editor immediately if they recognize a potential conflict of interest, if they feel unqualified to review the research, or if they cannot complete the review promptly.
  4. Identify Uncited Work: Call to the Editor’s attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published paper of which they have personal knowledge.

3. Double-Blind Peer Review for Unbiased Adjudication

To guarantee the highest standard of scholarly quality and prevent any bias based on author identity, reputation, or affiliation, we adopt a Double-Blind Peer Review model for estimating the scholarly quality of all submissions (including research articles, books, monographs, and related book forms).

This rigorous process ensures:

  • Anonymity: Reviewers do not know the identity of the author(s), and author(s) do not know the identity of the reviewer(s).
  • Unbiased Adjudication: The focus remains strictly on the intellectual content, methodology, robustness of data, and contribution to the subject matter, ensuring a fair and impartial quality assessment regardless of the scholarly work.

4. Open Access Publishing Program and Licensing

Our mission is to support the academic community by maximizing the dissemination of scholarly works.

Open Access Policy

All research Books, Monographs, and related book forms published under the Mariammal Educational Trust aided Tamilmanam Publishers Open Access Policy are fully open access. These works are immediately and freely available to read, download, and share globally, without subscription or registration barriers.

Creative Commons Licensing

To facilitate wide dissemination while protecting intellectual attribution, our publications operate under specific Creative Commons (CC) licenses:

Publication Type Primary License Permitted Use
Articles CC BY 4.0 (Attribution 4.0 International) Allows users to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format, and to remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, provided appropriate credit is given to the original author(s) and publication.
Books and Chapters (Academic/Research Focus) CC BY-SA 4.0 (Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International) Allows for commercial and non-commercial use, provided the material is appropriately attributed and any derivatives are distributed under the same license terms.
Books and Chapters (Specific Cases) CC BY-NC-SA (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike) Used in specific cases where authors request restrictions on commercial use, while still requiring attribution and share-alike conditions for derivatives.

Note on Transparency: In the case of books and chapters, the specific open-access model and Creative Commons license adopted will be clearly indicated on the title verso page for complete transparency regarding permitted usage rights.
